Poeina Suddarth’s genre was coined as subdued thrasher bluegrass by producer
and long time friend Smoke of OlDominion. Although Poeina has been inspired by and
closely knit into the Northwest hip hop community; her solo music has been more often
compared with Janis Joplin, Jeff Buckley and Billie Holiday.
Poeina lived for 8 years out of a van with her lover and dog, and roamed the country collaborating, and crafting her songwriting skills. While making stops in various small towns in Washington, Idaho, Oregon, and Arizona, Poeina was a music teacher, studio musician, and a community volunteer organizer. During a tour where she was a vocalist and hype girl for Northwestern hip hop group Dark Time Sunshine in April 2010, rapper Onry Ozzborn came up to her before the show and said, “I’m only going to say this one time, now is the time, you are a star girl. You need to get yourself your own stage”. It was those words that inspired her to go home and begin to launch her career.
Poeina’s solo music first hit the stage during her original musical production, “The Bedroom Show” in May of 2011. The show was based on the theme from her song "White Mountain Beauty" that says, “with the thunder brings the rain in the canyons echoing like the time I lost my faith and still survived”. The bedroom show was written, produced and performed by Poeina Suddarth with the support from the Northwestern community, and 30+ cast and crew members. Many of the contributing musicians such as the Shook Twins, Raelyn Olson on harp, Mary Ellen Grace on sax, and percussionist Sarah Linderman, were also featured on the album, Happy Whore.
Other Northwestern players featured on the album are Danny Haigh on piano, and Adam Hurst on cello.
Poeina is based in Los Angeles, CA where she has been working on a music video with Brett Spackman, writing music for Patrick Kilpatrick's upcoming film Active Shooter, and doing studio work for television and film with BunBoy music. Poeina also spends a lot of time on the road touring and building her fanbase. In December 2013 she will be going on her first European tour through Germany, Belguim, France, and Holland. The Songs & Whispers tour circuit will be running a European radio campaign before the start of the tour. This will put her song "Gasoline" in rotation in Europe, with a growing list of other radio stations in the US who are currently playing her music.
Poeina EP was released on iTunes through Longbridge Entertainment on February 18th, 2013
