Poeina

Poeina Suddarth’s genre was coined as subdued thrasher bluegrass by producer
and long time friend Smoke of OlDominion. Although Poeina has been inspired by and
closely knit into the Northwest hip hop community; her solo music has been more often
compared with Janis Joplin, Jeff Buckley and Billie Holiday.

Poeina lived for 8 years out of a van with her lover and dog, and roamed the country collaborating, and crafting her songwriting skills. While making stops in various small towns in Washington, Idaho, Oregon, and Arizona, Poeina was a music teacher, studio musician, and a community volunteer organizer. During a tour where she was a vocalist and hype girl for Northwestern hip hop group Dark Time Sunshine in April 2010, rapper Onry Ozzborn came up to her before the show and said, “I’m only going to say this one time, now is the time, you are a star girl. You need to get yourself your own stage”. It was those words that inspired her to go home and begin to launch her career.

Poeina’s solo music first hit the stage during her original musical production, “The Bedroom Show” in May of 2011. The show was based on the theme from her song "White Mountain Beauty" that says, “with the thunder brings the rain in the canyons echoing like the time I lost my faith and still survived”. The bedroom show was written, produced and performed by Poeina Suddarth with the support from the Northwestern community, and 30+ cast and crew members. Many of the contributing musicians such as the Shook Twins, Raelyn Olson on harp, Mary Ellen Grace on sax, and percussionist Sarah Linderman, were also featured on the album, Happy Whore.

Other Northwestern players featured on the album are Danny Haigh on piano, and Adam Hurst on cello.

Poeina is based in Los Angeles, CA where she has been working on a music video with Brett Spackman, writing music for Patrick Kilpatrick's upcoming film Active Shooter, and doing studio work for television and film with BunBoy music. Poeina also spends a lot of time on the road touring and building her fanbase. In December 2013 she will be going on her first European tour through Germany, Belguim, France, and Holland. The Songs & Whispers tour circuit will be running a European radio campaign before the start of the tour. This will put her song "Gasoline" in rotation in Europe, with a growing list of other radio stations in the US who are currently playing her music.

Poeina EP was released on iTunes through Longbridge Entertainment on February 18th, 2013

"Gasoline" is currently receiving airplay on the following radio stations.
KVNA Flagstaff, AZ
KRXB Boise, ID
KWSS Glendale, AZ
WWIR Hollywood, FL
KSBX Los Angeles, CA
NWCZ Tacoma, WA

Our Bio:
Hank & Cupcakes started out of Boredom. Here’s what happened:
We’d just recently returned from a crazy weird adventure in Havana, Cuba, where we’d been intensely studying Cuban Music for six months. It got a bit too crazy so we decided to go back to Tel Aviv, wrap up our lives and relocate to New York. We didn’t know anyone, we had no plan, it was just a hunch.

We weren’t taking on any new projects during this transition period, so one day I said to Hank, “Let’s just have a rehearsal and see what happens.” We knew there was no point in recruiting more musicians since we were going to leave anyway, so it was just us: Hank on the bass and me, Cupcakes, on the vocals & drums, fucking around.

One rehearsal led to another and another until Hank eventually said about a week later: “Why don’t we just rehearse everyday?” We didn’t plan on becoming a bass & drums duo, we thought that once we’d arrive to NYC we’d meet more musicians and form a ‘proper’ band, but during those few months of intense daily rehearsing, a sound was developing that was different and it became clear that this there was nothing missing.

We arrived in NYC late 2008 and were blown away by this magnificent inspiring city and it’s inhabitants. We had no idea what to do or how to start so the first thing we did was rent a daily slot at a rehearsal studio. The city was like a turbo engine in our creative process and new songs were fast to come. We had no idea who to talk to about booking a show and how the whole ‘business’ worked but after writing email after email, combing the city for venues we finally booked our first show at the end of 2008. There were 13 people there including Hank’s parents who were visiting and a handful of (the only) people we knew and the other band who played with us that night. The excitement of playing in New York City started such a fire in our bones that we didn’t stop and played every single show we were offered, hauling our gear in the subway and through the snow since we didn’t want to spend money on taxis. It came to a point where we were playing 3-4 shows a week in NYC alone. We then decided to spread our wings and started playing out of the city as much as we could. A weekend turned into a week which turned into a month and so on. Since arriving to the U.S, we’ve played hundreds of shows all over the country including some really awesome festivals and clubs.

Last August we flew to Berlin to record our debut album at the famous Hansa Studios where U2, David Bowie, R.E.M, Iggy Pop and many more legends have recorded legendary music. We made the album with Swedish producer Ludwig Boss and had the most incredible musical experience of our lives. Our new EP, 'Ain't No Love,' featuring the first single "Sweet Potion," was released on October 22, 2012 and our full-length album is due in early 2013.

We’re forever grateful to all the people who believe in us, to all our fans who come to our shows and to New York City for being an endless source of inspiration. See you soon on the road!

xx

Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad
Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad (PANDA!) is a quintet from Rochester, NY. Their psychedelic roots reggae album “In These Times” made iTunes Best of 2012 list. Over the past six years, PANDA! has performed 800 shows, put out a collection of live albums, and released a roots Americana record titled “Country” (2012).

"The band's five masterful musicians weave layers of complex music within a reggae framework and may be one of the most diverse bands in the genre." - JamBase

===========================================

For over six years, Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad’s live show has defined the band. Touring relentlessly, the Rochester, NY-based group is sustained by its passion to reinterpret, explore, and expand its music night after night.

After the 2006 release of their debut album, "Slow Down," GPGDS hit the road and never looked back. In April 2012, they released their first electric studio album in six years, "In These Times." This is the quintet’s second release on the California-based label Controlled Substance Sound Labs.

"In These Times" consists of 12 tracks that showcase Giant Panda’s psychedelic reggae sound. Bassist James Searl, guitarist Dylan Savage, and guitarist Dan Keller trade off songwriting and lead vocal duties, with backup vocals provided by drummer Chris O’Brian, and multi-instrumentalist Aaron Lipp. The album was mixed by Atlanta-based producer Billy Hume (Nas, STS9, Ludacris, Josh Ritter), and dubbed by the band’s long-time engineer Joel Scanlon.

"In These Times" explores a variety of emotions and themes, from the feel good, sing along vibe of “Change You,” to the political anthem “Pockets.” Guests on the album include Hawaii’s The Green, contributing backup vocals on “All Night Music,” and John Brown’s Body’s horn section on “Next Best Explosion,” and “Healing.” “I think it would be fair to say that this is the album that long-time Panda fans have been waiting for” says Chris O’Brian.

"In These Times" follows the bands’ lyrically-driven roots Americana album, "Country" (released January 2012). Combining acoustic instrumentation including slide guitar, banjo, harmonica, upright piano, percussion, and bass, "Country" showcases songs as they were first created: on the road, riding in the van, and jamming backstage. “Like early Wilco, with a healthy powdering of the stuff that made Gram Parsons’ music so deeply moving, “Country” is a gorgeous collection of Americana ditties.” – The Buffalo News

Mark Kroos
Mark Kroos plays 2 guitar necks at the same time. Originally from Lansing, MI but currently based in Williamsburg, VA he is one of the only people in the world touring his trade. His primarily instrumental style is characterized by open harmonies, polyphonic textures, incredible tapping technique, and is as entertaining to watch as it is to listen to. Live performances burst with energy and magnetism not typical of solo guitar music. Drawing influence from folk, Celtic, indie, and even punk rock artists as well as other great guitarists such as Michael Hedges, Phil Keaggy, Tommy Emmanuel and Leo Kottke, Mark Kroos has developed his own edge to the acoustic guitar.

In July of 2011 Mark competed in Guitar Player Magazine's 2011 Guitar Superstar Competition in Nashville for host Larry Carlton and renowned judges Muriel Anderson, Reeves Gabrels and Carl Verheyen, taking 1st place out of 5 invited competitors and thousands of others who had submitted online. Mark also picked up sponsorships from Ovation Guitars, D'Addario Strings, Planet Waves Cables and Kyser Capos.

"Mark Kroos plays with a sensitivity to the music and positive energy that is truly refreshing."

Muriel Anderson
1989 International Fingerstyle Guitar Champion

This October Mark released his second full-length instrumental guitar album, Down Along the Lines of Joy which features Mark on both double and single neck guitars. The album is based on the concept that while happiness is a fleeting feeling that comes and goes with outside influence, Joy remains in the heart regardless. A four-note theme which represents Joy occurs on the album several times throughout the album, during the upbeat songs, but also in some of the more somber songs.

Mark’s debut solo album, And Grace Will Lead Me Home was released in January, 2010. Tracks from the album have been licensed for multiple productions on CNN.

"I love this record. Mark's combination of impressive technique and memorable melodies create an absorbing listening experience"

Jeff Danna, Film Composer, Guitarist

In May of 2010, Mark embarked a sparsely-booked road trip, giving up his apartment in Williamsburg to play coffee shops and bars, relying on donations, human kindness and the grace of God. This road trip blossomed into a year-long concert tour filled with performances, clinics, and a multitude of new friends.

While on tour Mark wrote and recorded 4 track vocal EP titled The Sound of Snow, released in January, 2011. Themes from the album include traveling, homelessness, and most importantly, hope. The EP is intended as a thank you to all of Mark’s supporters and is available only for free online download atwww.markkroos.com/store.

Mark Kroos attended Bowling Green State University’s school of music from 2004-2006, majoring in Jazz studies and guitar performance where he studied under Chris Buzzelli and Matthew Ardizzone. He developed a greater understanding of the instrument and improved his technique immensely but also found that his ability was lacking in the jazz idiom and left the music school to tour with his ska/punk band, The Argonauts. When the band stopped playing regularly in 2009, Mark began teaching and picked up the acoustic guitar. A whole lot of writing, practicing and 2 guitar necks later there was the musical madness that is Mark Kroos.

Nineball
Formed in 1993. Nineball rose to the top of the independent music scene in the Mohawk Valley area with an army of fans behind them. Members went their separate ways to work on other projects in 1998 but reunited in 2010 to record a new album called NINEBALL which will officially release in June 2011. Nineball is currently booking aggressively to promote the album in the Upstate New York region.

The backbone of Nineball is its rhythm section. Ken Delaney on drums and Scott Henderson on bass work together and off each other to give this band's sound great movement and a deep low end. Dallas Sheppard's alternatively driving and melodic approach on guitar rounds things out and adds color to support Joe Sweet's present and confident vocals. The band is tight, aggressive and professional and Sweet is a consummate front man who can command a crowd.

Nineball will remind you of all of the hard rock bands you love and most importantly, they'll come to be one of the hard rock bands you love.

Carmen Caramonica Trio
Finally, after years of playing together, Carmen Caramanica on guitar, Cosmo Castellano on bass and Rick Compton on drums, have released a CD!

Nicely recorded and mixed by Ben Salzman, a long time friend of the trio,it's an inspired mix of collective jazz recorded live in a coffee house setting.

As anyone who has see us perform knows, our trio embraces the idea of collective arranging and improvisation. We know the tunes, the chords and melodies, and from there we jump in and try to create a piece of music that is living and developing NOW, in the moment. Each of us is involved is in creating our own part while interacting with the others, bringing our own personalities together with the trio's collective identity. Whew, that's a mouthful. What makes it a pleasure for us, and interesting for the audience, we hope, is the genuine musical respect and personal affection we have for each other as life-long friends. We communicate what our musical intentions are to each other so instantly sometimes, it's uncanny, especially to us! The audience feels it, too, but some people think we spend many hours rehearsing to get it right. NO. We've played together so much and with so much interaction that sometimes it feels, even to us, like we've "woodshedded" much of this. No, it's just the way we play "on the fly." We listen to each other and react to the music.

It's great fun for us, and I know a lot of you have come to our gigs time after time to see that aspect of our music. It's not just about one musician soloing over a background of chord changes. As wonderful as that can be this is more about three good friends making a new piece of music every time we play together. We're thrilled that our friend Ben was able to get a recorded snapshot of our music. We're glad to finally be able to bring some of it to those who have been asking for years, "Where's your CD."
Well, here it is. We hope you enjoy it!
